iMac8,1 + rEFIt + USB boot = Sucking hard, Ubuntu + Behind proxy = Sucking even harder!
I was trying to install Ubuntu on iMac today.
I brought my usb thumb disks to work. I used those sticks to install Windows on my laptop and they are fully support USB boot.
However I found that my iMac at work does not boot the USB correctly.
It always gives me errors like "non-system disk".
I had to burn the Ubuntu ISO into a DVD in order to install.
After Ubuntu was installed on the iMac. I tried to make a Windows installation USB and tried to boot it on the iMac. However it loads the internal hard disk instead of the thumb disk after I selected to boot Windows on the USB stick. It sucks!
I wanted to update the libraries/software in Ubuntu. However in corpnet I need to use proxy to browse the internet.
So I set the proxy inside System -> Preference -> Network Proxy and checked the "Apply this setting system wide" checkbox.
After that I launched the Ubuntu update manager and it said that it cannot resolve the host name of the update server. Shit!
And I found that I need to set proxy inside Synaptic Package Manager in order to make Ubuntu update manager to access the Internet thru proxy. So the checkbox inside the network proxy does not have any effect on this. What a bullshit.
I also wanted to install some other software to try out. I wanted to test whether it plays flash movies. I went to the Adobe web site and chose the Apt install option.
Apt said that it cannot resolve the host name! What the fuck. Another individual setting for apt-get.
It causes me so such trouble to use Ubuntu behind a proxy. I need to set proxy for every single piece of software to access the internet and I need to Google for where to set the proxy.
I advise everyone not to use Ubuntu if your computer is going to be staying behind a proxy…
